How Vitamin C Support For Your Immune System

For decades we have been told that vitamin C support is the key to preventing the common cold and the flu. This is absolutely right, but do you know why?
Let’s break down what exactly vitamin C support can do to protect you…
So what do we need to know about the immune system…
Your immune cells are very unique, they actually have specific vitamin C receptors on them. They are unlike any other cell in the body because they have receptors on their membranes that give them the ability to receive and hold the vitamin C and disperse it into the cell when it’s needed.
These immune cells use their own discretion as to whether or not it uses the vitamin C or keeps it solid on the membrane. So, when you get sick or need to fight off a potential illness or infection, the immune cells pump that vitamin C in from the membrane into the center of the cell.
Researchers don’t have a lot of conclusive evidence as to what is actually happening once the vitamin C support is inside the cell. What we do know is that when you’re sick or when you’re battling an infection your needs for vitamin C increase tremendously.
Your immune cells spring to action as soon as or even before you’re sick, and you can end up having an increase of up to 100 times the vitamin C inside the cell compared to the plasma level.
This actually starts a vicious cycle because when you’re sick you need more vitamin C but you’re probably not getting enough of it from your diet. It’s the worst time to be in a vitamin C deprived state.
The problem is…
Vitamin C has been so over-marketed that we’re kind of numb to it. But I want to make sure that you understand how awesome it truly is to have vitamin C in your corner.
So let’s look at the different immune cells and how they function…
First off we have natural killer cells. N.K. cells are sort of like the hit men of the immune system. You have specific T cells that go around place a label on foreign bodies and foreign invaders, like various kinds of infections. The T cells place a label on them and then it’s the job of the N.K. cells to travel throughout the body and kill whatever has a label on it.
Well, vitamin C increases the natural killer cell’s ability to find where there’s a label. That’s all we really know about their connection.
Next up, neutrophils…
Then we have the neutrophils, which fight bacterial infections, which they are neutralize or kill in a completely different ways. What they do is travel around the body and they engulf the bacterial infection and then they shoot them with a very short lived oxygen free radical. This kills it at its root and it’s a very precise process.
Vitamin C improves the ability of these neutrophils to engulf the bacterial infection – we don’t know much about how, but tests confirm that the immune cells are better able to manage their task with the increased presence of vitamin C.
Next on the list…
We’re talking about lymphocytes; whose job it is to produce antibodies.
Antibodies are what allow us to resist colds, flus and other illnesses, diseases, etc. So if we have these lymphocytes in decent supply, we can produce more antibodies. Vitamin C comes to the rescue again here, as it’s been shown to produce more lymphocytes.
Vitamin C has also been shown to directly stimulate the production of IGA, IDG and IGM immune cells, meaning that we have the ability to produce the right kind of antibodies for any given situations with the help of some extra vitamin C.
The studies have proved it…
A study was published in The Journal of Nutrients and it took a look at 28 individuals, broken into two separate groups. One group received 1000 milligrams of Vitamin C daily. The other group a placebo. What they found at the end of the study is that the group that ended up receiving the placebo had an 85 percent rate of contracting the common cold versus the vitamin C group which was at 47 percent.
They also found at the end of the study that the vitamin C group, on average, had a cold length that was 59 percent shorter in duration. Which demonstrates that not only does vitamin C actually boost your immune system, it shortens the life of a cold too.
Given these results, many people have asked if it’s useful to megadose vitamin C, to ensure they have enough stored in their system to support and strengthen their immune system. The short answer is yes.
Don’t forget your first line of defense…
You have to remember that your first line of defense against any kind of illness is your mucous membranes. Your nose and saliva catch bacteria and viruses and stop them from affecting you.
Well, vitamin C can be useful for reinforcing this level of defense too, in that it helps you produce more collagen, which is a large part of what makes up the mucous. So, if you’re not producing enough collagen then you’re not going to have as strong a line of defense against incoming threats.Don’t struggle with deficiency…
Unfortunately, it’s easy to be deprived of vitamin C. With the Western diet being what it typically is, many Americans are struggling to get enough – and even those that eat a healthy, balanced diet often aren’t getting enough due to a lack of nutrients in the soil their food is coming from.
So, the alternative is to supplement with vitamin C, to ensure that you’ve always got enough to both prevent and fight off illness. We recommend a Micelle Liposomal formula, like Designs for Health’s Liposomal C, as that will ensure maximum absorption.
Since vitamin C is water-soluble, it tends to go in one end and out the other if it isn’t properly absorbed. With a Liposomal Vitamin C, it will get into your bloodstream and be delivered to your cells, so you’ll have a backlog of this vitamin to call on when your immune system is called into action and needs it!
