Why You Can’t Willpower Your Way Out of a Chronic Health Standstill

We live in a culture that treats health like a performance review.

Society conditions us to believe that if a protocol isn’t working, if our fatigue is crushing, or if our bodies are actively breaking down, the answer is simply to try harder. Reach for a stricter diet, a more intense wellness routine, or a longer checklist of supplements. We treat our biology like an employee we can micromanage, force, and hustle into submission.

But as a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D) and a clinical herbalist, I am here to tell you the cold, hard truth: Biology does not care about your willpower.

When your health is at a complete, stagnant standstill, adding more intensity to your life isn’t just ineffective—it is actively keeping you sick.

The Illusion of “Pushing Through”

For the longest time, I was the absolute queen of the “push harder” mentality. With a background rooted deep in rigorous clinical science, I believed that every problem had a logical, aggressive solution.

Then, my life hit an absolute apocalypse.

The catastrophic, high-stakes stress of my past career manifested as a literal, physical brain injury. My health levelled. My career crumbled. And the standard medical checklists—the very ones I understood inside and out as a pharmacist—had absolutely no answers for me.

I was doing everything “right,” yet I was getting sicker.

That was the exact moment I learned the hard way that you cannot out-muscle a burned-out nervous system. When your body is drowning in biological chaos, stepping on the gas when the engine is completely out of oil will only cause the system to seize. Your body isn’t lazy; it is stuck in a permanent, protective gridlock because it simply does not feel safe.

The Missing Link: Clinical Science Meets Internal Safety

Real, lasting restoration doesn’t happen by stacking more “to-dos” onto a depleted frame. It happens when you finally stop fighting the chaos and start architecting a blueprint that forces your body to heal from within.

To save my own health and rebuild my life from scratch, I had to completely change my approach. I had to bridge the gap between two worlds that rarely talk to each other:

Rigorous Clinical Science: Understanding the deep biochemistry and medication/supplement cross-talk happening in the body.

Natural Biological Restoration: Utilizing targeted herbal and metabolic frameworks to rebuild what chronic stress has aggressively stripped away.

When you pair clinical rigor with plant medicine and true nervous system regulation, you stop chasing symptoms. You change the cellular environment entirely.

Reclaiming Your Position as the CEO of Your Health

This realization is exactly why I developed the Integrated Breakthrough Method™ at The Herb Doctor Consulting. I didn’t create this system out of a textbook; I built it because it was the exact framework required to reclaim my own physical and neurological vitality when the traditional system failed me.

If you are currently sitting at a total health standstill, tired of getting sicker under standard care, and exhausted from trying to willpower your way through the day—give yourself permission to drop the heavy expectations tonight.

You cannot grind your way into deep healing. It’s time to stop fighting the checklist, quiet the biological noise, and give your body the strategic safety it needs to finally heal.

Why Real Sunlight is So Important

Why real sunlight is so important. When patients come to me complaining of poor sleep, low energy, stubborn weight, and brain fog, they are usually expecting a new supplement protocol or a dietary overhaul. While those foundational elements are crucial, there is often a massive, invisible factor sabotaging their health: their light environment.

Light is not just illumination; it is a biological input. It controls your hormones, dictates your sleep architecture, and sets your circadian rhythm more than almost anything else you do. And unfortunately, modern living has most of us getting it completely wrong.

Here is the science behind how light impacts your biology—and exactly how you can get it right.

What Real Sun Exposure Does for Your Body

When natural sunlight hits your body, it delivers three critical elements that your biology depends on to function optimally:

UV Light: Triggers vitamin D synthesis in your skin. Vitamin D is essential for hormone production, immune resilience, and bone health.

Infrared Light: Penetrates deep into your tissues, stimulating mitochondrial function and drastically reducing systemic inflammation.

Circadian Signals: Morning light enters through your eyes and signals to your brain’s master clock what time it is. That single, powerful signal sets your cortisol curve, your daily energy levels, and your melatonin release timing for the entire day.

The Sunlight Deficiency Epidemic

Look at the average daily routine: We wake up and immediately put a phone six inches from our face. We commute behind glass that filters out beneficial UV rays. We sit under fluorescent or standard LED overhead lights for eight hours, and then we watch a television or laptop screen until the moment we fall asleep.

The problem with this routine is that artificial light is overwhelmingly heavy in blue wavelengths. In nature, blue light signifies midday. When you expose your eyes to screens all day and night, you are constantly telling your brain it is noon, regardless of the actual time.

The result? A circadian system that never fully calibrates. When your circadian rhythm is out of whack, everything else follows. It manifests as insomnia, chronic fatigue, imbalanced hormones, mood swings, and blood sugar dysregulation.

Enter: The “Light Stack”

You don’t have to move to the wilderness to fix this. By implementing a daily “Light Stack,” you can send your body the right signals at the right times, allowing your natural vitality to take over.

Steps 1 & 2

1. Get Morning Sun Aim for 10 to 20 minutes outside within an hour of waking. Do this without sunglasses, contacts, or windows in the way. This is simple, free, and incredibly effective. Even if it is cloudy, the lux levels outside are high enough to trigger the necessary biological pathways.

2. Fix Your Indoor Light Environment Standard LEDs work against your biology all day. Consider alternatives like Chromalux full-spectrum bulbs for your workspace. As evening approaches, use dimmer switches and warm-toned or red bulbs to shift your environment toward low-light conditions. This is the biological trigger that allows melatonin to naturally rise. Finally, ensure your bedroom has blackout curtains—complete darkness is non-negotiable for restorative sleep.

Steps 3 & 4

3. Block Junk Light at Night After sunset, blue, green, and violet wavelengths suppress melatonin. If you must work on your computer or phone at night, invest in high-quality blue-light-blocking glasses (like TrueDark) to filter out those alerting wavelengths. You can also utilize screen protectors, like the Bodyguardz Red Light Converter, to transform blue light into warmer tones directly at the source.

4. Add Clinical Red Light Therapy Natural sunlight contains red and near-infrared wavelengths that penetrate your skin and feed your mitochondria directly, resulting in increased ATP (energy) production, faster tissue recovery, and optimized cellular function.

While getting outside is essential, you can supercharge this process with targeted, clinical-grade red light therapy. At our clinic in Fountain, Colorado, we utilize the Contour Light system. This advanced, FDA-cleared technology delivers highly concentrated red and near-infrared wavelengths exactly where your body needs them. It is a scientifically sound, completely non-invasive way to accelerate healing, manage pain, and support metabolic health—independent of the weather outside.

Your body uses light as information. When you stop giving it “junk” data and start providing the right signals at the right times, true healing begins.

Zyto Biocommunication

Have you ever felt like your health is a giant puzzle, but you’re missing the box top? You know the pieces are there—the midday fatigue, the occasional gut flare-up, or that stubborn “brain fog”—but you aren’t sure how they fit together.

Many of my clients come to me asking for answers, while others aren’t even sure what questions to ask. The truth is, wellness is not a “one size fits all” formula. What supports your neighbor’s energy might actually be adding to your own internal stress.

The good news? Your body already has the answers. We just need a way to listen. That is where ZYTO Biocommunication comes in.

Bridging the Communication Gap

The core of ZYTO technology is biocommunication scanning. By measuring your body for Galvanic Skin Response (GSR)—the same safe, subtle technology used in high-end fitness trackers—we can “ask” your body questions and receive a direct response.

During a scan, the ZYTO software introduces “Virtual Items”—digital signatures representing nutritional supplements, foods, essential oils, or specific wellness services. As each item is introduced, the ZYTO Hand Cradle measures your body’s unique response.

The Search for “Coherence” with Zyto Biocommunication

We aren’t just looking for “good” or “bad” results. We are looking for Biological Coherence. This tells us which specific supports your body is most in sync with right now.

Think of it as a “digital conversation” that helps us identify the Hidden Heavyweights filling up your “Rain Barrel” (your total environmental and biological load). By identifying what your body prefers, we can create a targeted, effective plan that stops the guesswork.

Personal Wellness Areas: Putting the Puzzle Together

A ZYTO scan doesn’t just look at one symptom; it looks at the whole person. Our sessions are designed to help you improve and maintain all areas of your “Personal Wellness Puzzle,” including:

If you’ve been following the news regarding metabolic health, medications like Ozempic® and Wegovy® have likely dominated your feed. These drugs have reached a “deafening” level of fame for their ability to quiet hunger, regulate blood sugar, and accelerate weight loss.

However, as a leader in functional nutrition, I believe in a more sustainable approach. While these medications do a remarkable job of mimicking hormones, they don’t address the underlying biological foundation. The real secret to unlocking lasting appetite control isn’t found in a needle—it’s hidden in your gut microbiome.

By leveraging targeted nutritional interventions like PaleoFiber® RS, Phytobiome, and Theraslim, you can stimulate your body’s own production of GLP-1 naturally and effectively.

What is GLP-1 and Why Does It Matter?

GLP-1 (Glucagon-like peptide-1) is a hormone produced in the gut that acts as a master regulator of hunger. When we eat, GLP-1 is released to communicate a sense of fullness to the brain. Beyond satiety, it performs three critical functions:

Reduces systemic inflammation within the digestive tract.

Slows gastric emptying, keeping you full for longer.

Stimulates insulin release, which stabilizes blood sugar levels.

What is a GLP-1 Agonist?

It might be obvious, but it’s worth remembering—drugs like Ozempic® and Wegovy® don’t actually produce real GLP-1. They produce a synthetic version that mimics the hormone’s appetite-suppressing qualities.

To be fair, the synthetic version produced by semaglutide drugs actually lasts longer than natural GLP-1. It can persist for days, whereas natural GLP-1 doesn’t linger for long. This is a big reason why GLP-1 agonists are so effective when it comes to appetite control and weight loss.

Yet it still invites the question—if GLP-1 is a naturally-occurring hormone, then it makes sense you should be able to increase it naturally, right? Right!

The Natural Boost: How Diet Influences GLP-1

The Synthetic vs. Natural Approach

Semaglutide drugs are “GLP-1 agonists.” They provide a synthetic version of the hormone that persists in the body for days. While effective, they are a temporary fix for a metabolic system that is often just “starved” of the right inputs.

If GLP-1 is a naturally occurring hormone, the logical (and more holistic) goal should be to optimize your body’s endogenous production.

Fiber: The Unsung Hero of Gut Health

Is All Fiber Created Equally in GLP-1 Production?

Short answer: no. Some types of dietary fiber are far more effective at producing natural GLP-1 than others. There are dozens of fibers out there, found in an even wider variety of plants, and each one has its own unique health benefits.

For example, pectin from berries helps lower cholesterol, psyllium from plantago ovata plants fights constipation, and lignin from flax and rye is good for heart health.

The Best Types of Fiber for Producing GLP-1

The best categories of fiber for appetite control and natural GLP-1 production are those that are considered fermentable, or prebiotic. These are fibers that your body can’t digest easily, so they end up reaching your colon mostly intact, where they are fermented by good microbes.

Two of the best types of prebiotic fiber for producing GLP-1 are: beta-glucan and resistant starch.

Beta-glucan comes from foods like oats, barley, and beans. New studies demonstrate beta-glucan achieves remarkable results in not only satiety but also weight management. In one preliminary study with mice, researchers found beta-glucan induced the most weight loss in obese animals.

Resistant starch comes from foods like unripe bananas, potatoes, and oatmeal. This unique fiber produces more butyrate than any other type of dietary fiber, and butyrate is a short-chain fatty acid known to increase GLP-1 production.

The Power Trio: Scientific Tools for Natural GLP-1

To truly lead your metabolic health, you need more than just “more fiber.” You need a clinical strategy. Here is how we use targeted supplementation to trigger the GLP-1 pathway:

1. PaleoFiber® RS: The Foundation of Satiety

Not all fiber is created equal. To trigger GLP-1, you need fermentable, prebiotic fibers.

Resistant Starch (RS): Found in PaleoFiber® RS, this unique starch produces more butyrate than any other fiber. Butyrate is a short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) that directly signals your gut cells to release GLP-1.

Beta-Glucan: This fiber has shown remarkable results in clinical studies for weight management and lipid metabolism. By combining these, PaleoFiber® RS provides the precise fuel your gut microbes need to manufacture your own “internal Ozempic.”

2. Phytobiome: Diversity is the Key

Your gut microbes are the “factory” that produces GLP-1. If the factory is understaffed, production stalls. Phytobiome is a specialized blend of fruit and vegetable extracts high in polyphenols. These compounds act as “selective fertilizers,” encouraging the growth of beneficial bacteria like Akkermansia muciniphila, which is heavily linked to metabolic health and natural GLP-1 secretion.

3. Theraslim: The Metabolic Accelerator

While fiber sets the stage, Theraslim provides the metabolic support necessary to manage weight effectively. It is designed to support healthy insulin sensitivity and lipid metabolism, ensuring that once your GLP-1 levels rise, your body is biologically primed to burn fat and maintain energy levels without the “crash” often associated with caloric restriction.

Other Foods That Boost GLP-1 Naturally

To naturally augment your GLP-1 levels and foster gut health, a varied dietary approach is key. Here are some effective strategies:

Incorporate Prebiotic Fiber

For reasons listed above. But it bears repeating—prebiotic fiber is the number one fuel source for beneficial gut microbes.

Opt for Healthy Fats

Most Americans get too many Omega-6 fatty acids and not enough Omega-3s. Yet Omega-3s—found in fish, avocados, olives, and nuts—are hugely important for optimal gut health and thereby appetite hormones.

Prioritize Protein

Opting for lean meats, fish, tofu, and legumes ensures the intake of essential amino acids and can also stimulate GLP-1 secretion.

Lifestyle Influences on GLP-1

Your daily habits can significantly impact GLP-1 production:

Exercise

Studies suggest that regular physical activity can boost GLP-1 levels significantly. A blend of strength training and cardiovascular exercise is most beneficial.

Stress Reduction

Stress can negatively affect GLP-1 production. Techniques such as yoga and meditation can help manage stress and maintain healthy GLP-1 levels.

Sleep

Adequate sleep is crucial for hormone regulation, including GLP-1 production. Aim for 7-8 hours of quality sleep nightly.

What About Berberine?

Why “Nature’s Ozempic” Isn’t Berberine

Social media is currently obsessed with berberine. However, as an authority in this space, I must provide a correction: Berberine is an antimicrobial. While it has some blood sugar benefits, it can actually irritate the GI tract and potentially disrupt the very microbes responsible for GLP-1 production.

The true natural alternative is a sophisticated combination of resistant starches and polyphenols that work with your biology, not against it.

Final Word

The Authority Blueprint for Weight Loss

To maximize your results with PaleoFiber® RS, Phytobiome, and Theraslim, integrate these lifestyle pillars:

Prioritize Protein: Lean proteins and legumes provide essential amino acids that work synergistically with GLP-1.

Strategic Movement: A mix of resistance training and zone 2 cardio has been shown to boost GLP-1 levels naturally.

Circadian Rhythm: Sleep is the “reset button” for your hormones. Aim for 7–8 hours to ensure your hunger hormones remain balanced.

Final Word

Pharmaceuticals have their place, but they shouldn’t be the only tool in your kit. By nourishing your microbiome with the resistant starch in PaleoFiber® RS, the polyphenols in Phytobiome, and the metabolic support of Theraslim, you are taking the lead in your own health journey.

In the world of weight-loss, your gut is the unsung hero that plays a pivotal role in how food is digested, how fat is stored, and whether you feel hungry or full. So, let’s take a deep dive into how your gut microbiome influences weight-loss and why it’s your secret weapon in achieving a healthier you.

The Role of Gut Microbes

Your body is home to trillions of microorganisms, with the majority residing in your intestines. These bacteria, collectively known as the gut microbiome, are crucial for your health. They communicate with your immune system, produce essential vitamins, and significantly impact your digestive processes. Imagine your gut as a bustling metropolis of microscopic organisms, all working together to keep your body in balance.

Digestion and Nutrient Absorption

The bacteria in your gut interact directly with the food you consume, influencing nutrient absorption and energy storage. Studies have shown that individuals with obesity often have different gut bacteria compared to those without. For example, certain bacteria are adept at breaking down dietary fiber into beneficial compounds that promote weight-loss.

One fascinating study involving 77 pairs of twins, where one twin was obese and the other was not, revealed that the obese twin had a less diverse gut microbiome. In another study, when the gut microbiota from obese mice was transplanted into normal mice, there was a 60% increase in body fat within 2 weeks without any increase in food consumption or obvious differences in energy expenditure.

According to this study, “Obesity and obesity-related metabolic disorders are characterized by specific alterations in the composition and function of the human gut microbiome.”

Inflammation and Weight Gain

Inflammation, a response triggered by the immune system, can be influenced by the gut microbiome. Diets high in fat and sugar can increase inflammatory chemicals in the bloodstream, contributing to weight gain. Certain gut bacteria produce substances like lipopolysaccharides (LPS), which cause inflammation and have been linked to weight gain and insulin resistance.

Conversely, beneficial bacteria such as Bifidobacteria and Akkermansia help maintain a healthy gut barrier and reduce inflammation which is why it is important to use a good Pre, Pro, and Postbiotic to feed and maintain beneficial bacteria. Research on mice has shown that increasing these beneficial bacteria through dietary changes can reduce weight gain and improve insulin sensitivity.

The Role of GLP-1 in Appetite Control

GLP-1 (Glucagon-Like Peptide-1) is a hormone that plays a crucial role in regulating appetite. It’s produced in the gut and helps suppress hunger, making you feel full longer. Semaglutide drugs like Ozempic® and Wegovy® work by mimicking the action of GLP-1, but did you know you can naturally boost GLP-1 through your diet?

Prebiotic fiber is one of the most effective ways to stimulate the production of GLP-1. When you consume prebiotic fiber, it reaches the colon mostly undigested, where it serves as food for beneficial gut bacteria. These bacteria ferment the fiber, producing short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) that trigger the release of GLP-1. Foods rich in prebiotic fiber include green bananas, raw potatoes, oats, and more.

Hormonal Regulation of Appetite

Your gut bacteria also influence the production of hormones that regulate appetite. Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), produced when gut bacteria ferment dietary fiber, play a significant role in this process. SCFAs can stimulate the release of hormones like GLP-1 and PYY, which increase feelings of fullness and reduce hunger.

For example, in a study analyzing three different cohorts of test subjects—one with zero prebiotic fiber, one with a moderate amount, and one with a high dosage—the data showed that “postprandial GLP-1 levels increased with the high prebiotic fiber diet.” The study also found that “the gut microbiota influences satiety hormone production” and that a healthy gut microbiota can “improve weight-loss outcomes.”

Gut Microbiome and Weight-Loss

Recent research has shown that the composition of your gut microbiome can affect your ability to lose weight. Another study by an independent research institute in Seattle analyzed individuals in a wellness program and found that those who lost weight had different gut bacteria compared to those who did not. Specifically, the weight-loss group had more genes that promote the growth of beneficial bacteria.

Foods That Promote a Healthy Gut

To support a healthy gut microbiome and potentially aid in weight-loss, consider incorporating the following foods into your diet:

Whole Grains: High in fiber, which supports beneficial bacteria.

Fruits and Vegetables: Diverse fibers in these foods promote a healthy gut.

Nuts and Seeds: Contain fiber and healthy fats that support gut bacteria.

Polyphenol-Rich Foods: Dark chocolate, green tea, and red wine promote the growth of good bacteria.

Fermented Foods: Yogurt, kombucha, kefir, and sauerkraut contain beneficial bacteria.

Foods to Avoid

Certain foods can negatively impact your gut bacteria, such as:

Sugary Foods: Can stimulate the growth of harmful bacteria.

Fried Foods: May reduce beneficial bacteria in the intestines.

Unhealthy Fats: Saturated fats can promote the growth of disease-causing bacteria.

Conclusion

Your gut microbiome plays a vital role in digestion, inflammation, and appetite regulation, all of which can influence your weight. While altering your gut microbiome specifically for weight-loss remains a developing science, maintaining a healthy diet rich in prebiotic fiber can support a healthy gut and overall well-being.

Fiber is the New Protein. For years, protein’s been the poster child of nutrition—synonymous with muscle mass, weight loss, and appearances on practically every bio-hacker podcast. But in our rush for gains, have we left something crucial behind?

Overhyped, Undernourished

According to FDA guidelines, most Americans consume around twice their daily recommended protein, while only ~5% get enough fiber (25-30g). That’s not just bad for digestion—it’s leaving our overall health backed up.

Culture shifts slowly. We’ve been so focused on protein that we’ve left a critical nutrient behind. If you’re looking to optimize your health, the question to be asking yourself each day is: “did I get my 30 grams?”

Benefits of Vibration Therapy. Many health trends come and go, but some actually prove to be worth the hype surrounding them. This is the case of a just emerging health and fitness technique known as vibration therapy (also called whole body vibration).

Like so many other holistic practices, vibration therapy is new— but also not new. The benefits are now becoming available to the “general public”, but vibrations have been used for a century or two for health purposes and have their roots in ancient healing practices.

Whether you’ve heard of this “new” therapy or not, here’s a closer look at what it is and the surprising benefits it has for a very wide range of people.

What is Vibration Therapy?

Using vibrations as a therapeutic method is believed to have originated in ancient Greece.

Greek physicians used bow-like instruments with strings that could be plucked, sending out minor vibrations. They were mostly used over the wounds of soldiers as it was discovered that these vibrations helped pus to drain more quickly and stimulated healing.

Interestingly, vibration therapy doesn’t have much recorded use after ancient times until the 1800s.

Though the Russians are often credited with the modern “discovery” of whole-body vibration, it was actually a Swedish physician named Gustav Zander who developed exercise machines, including a vibration one around 1867.

Later, in 1895, Dr. John Harvey Kellogg (the one who invented flake cereal) introduced a vibrating chair to his health clinic to improve circulation and address certain ailments.

Russia came into the picture later in the 1960s when it was discovered that vibrations could be used to strengthen the bone mass and muscles of astronauts. This was a key discovery because astronauts were likely to lose bone mass and suffer fractures at a younger age due to space travel.

Fast forward to today, and vibration therapy is no longer exclusive or used only by astronauts and health clinics. In fact, it’s now available to almost anyone…

Who Can Use Vibration Therapy? + How it Works

Despite the word “therapy” in the name, whole body vibration is not something you need to go to a healthcare professional for.

Vibration plates are small, portable machines that bring vibration therapy to you. They can easily be used at home for a wide range of purposes and have also started to appear in gyms and fitness centers.

Essentially, vibration plates work by sending tiny vibrations throughout your body. You can stand on one to get a whole-body effect, or place a specific limb, muscle group, etc. on the plate for a more localized effect.

Vibration plates have become very popular with elite athletes because they add an extra dimension to training exercises. However, they are equally as beneficial for “everyday” people, particularly older adults who want to work on muscle strength or improve bone density.

To put it simply, nearly anyone can use and benefit from the power of vibrations. They can enhance a low-impact workout, give your muscles a massage, boost circulation, and much more.

Top Benefits of Vibration Therapy / Whole Body Vibration

Improves Bone Health & Density

Improving bone health is a goal for more than just astronauts. Older adults, especially women, are at risk of losing bone density, which could lead to harmful fractures down the road.

Research has revealed that whole body vibration may help prevent osteoporosis by stimulating growth hormone production. It also appears to work by regulating the activity of certain cells responsible for bone remodelling, helping to strengthen bones.

In one small study, women who used a vibration plate had an increase in lumbar bone density of 4.3% after six months. By contrast, the group that did not use a vibration plate lost 1.9% of lumbar bone density after six months.

This simple therapy is so promising that researchers have concluded it “may represent the foundation of a safe, non-drug means to protect and improve the musculoskeletal system”.

Activates Muscles & Increases Strength

Using a vibration plate is a simple way to make any kind of workout more effective (one of the reasons they are so popular with athletes).

A major reason for this is the fact that whole body vibration activates up to 138% more muscles fibers than a standard workout. This means more of your muscles are put to work in the same period of exercise, and you may be working out muscles that are typically inactive.

All of this adds up to greater gains in muscle strength without increasing workouts.

And this doesn’t only apply to elite athletes looking for an edge. One study found that using a vibration plate to complete exercises was just as effective at increasing strength and muscle mass in older men as regular fitness training.

Helps with Muscle Soreness & Recovery

Whenever you give your muscles a good workout, soreness inevitably follows. Recovery may be fairly quick for the young, but you tend to feel the soreness more (sometimes a lot more) as you get older.

This is where vibration therapy enters as a recovery tool. Not only can it help you to have a better workout, it can also help your muscles to relax and recover post-workout. Some research even shows that vibration can help prevent soreness in certain muscles.

If you are feeling sore muscles, it’s quite simple to turn a vibration plate into a massage machine. The tiny vibrations give a gentle massage that can be directed at whatever muscle group comes into contact with the plate.

You may even be able to use vibrations for other types of pain. For example, the study on whole body vibration and bone density found that chronic back pain decreased for participants as a surprising “side effect” of the therapy.

Helps Improve Flexibility & Balance (and May Prevent Falls!)

Flexibility is an often-overlooked aspect of physical fitness. It’s all about the range of motion you have and can help to prevent injuries, pulled muscles, etc.

Stretching specific muscle groups is one of the most common ways to improve flexibility and can be a very helpful practice. However, using whole body vibration as part of an exercise or stretching routine can also improve flexibility without any extra effort.

Again, this is a very helpful aspect of vibration therapy that applies to everyone from competitive athletes to older adults.

In the latter case, at least one study has shown that performing various exercises on a vibration plate— including balance and flexibility exercises— may help prevent falls in adults over 60. The researchers theorized that this was because the vibrations activated sensory receptors as well strengthened muscles.

Benefits of Vibration Therapy Burns More Fat & Calories

Losing weight is often associated with long hours spent in the gym. And while it’s true that exercise (along with diet) is essential for getting to or maintaining a healthy weight, whole body vibration offers a “shortcut” to burning fat and calories.

When you complete a workout on a vibrating surface, you are activating more muscles than you would be on a stationary surface. This means your body has to work harder, which equals improved muscle strength as we already discussed.

It also means that your body is using more energy to do the same workout, and that means more efficient fat burning.

In studies on vibration plates and weight loss, the results show that adding in vibration contributes to long-term weight loss and reduced abdominal fat more than a standard fitness program. Vibration plates also seem to be helpful for improving the results seen by older adults, including the postmenopausal women in this study.

Boosts Circulation (Including to Your Skin)

Yet another benefit of vibration therapy is that it helps improve blood circulation. And the good news is that all you have to do is use a vibration plate as a massager to get this benefit— no exercises required!

Better circulation is good for your whole body. Your blood carries oxygen and vital nutrients to cells and tissues, and good circulation means these substances are getting where they need to go efficiently.

However, improved circulation is especially good for your skin. Like the rest of your body, your skin relies on oxygen and nutrients carried through the blood to stay healthy and young-looking. If this supply gets slowed down, your skin may start looking older than it is.

Interestingly, vibration therapy has shown particularly good results for reducing the appearance of cellulite. Simply completing two exercises and two massage periods on a vibration plate led to a 25.7% reduction of cellulite in the thigh area. Not bad!

Good for Your Heart

It’s no secret that heart disease is the leading cause of death in the developed world. And one of the most significant risk factors for heart disease is high blood pressure.

Conventional exercise (particularly the aerobic kind) is an excellent way to help reduce blood pressure by strengthening your heart. However, there’s a particular aspect of heart health it often doesn’t address arterial stiffness.

Arterial stiffness refers to the stiffening of your arteries due to the loss or degradation of elastin fibers. This stiffness often precedes and contributes to high blood pressure.

Researchers from Japan made something of a breakthrough on this matter when they discovered that whole body vibration therapy could decrease arterial stiffness in young men. The research has continued and shows positive results for those at more risk of a heart attack, including obese individuals.

Of note, vibration therapy still reduced blood pressure and arterial stiffness in stroke survivors who could not engage their lower limbs. This suggests that vibration is effective even apart from any type of exercise.

Benefits of Vibration Therapy Aids Injury Recovery

As you can see, vibration therapy has numerous at-home uses. But it also shines in a clinical setting, particularly for speeding recovery from certain types of injuries.

Perhaps the biggest example of this is the positive effects whole body vibration has on those recovering from spinal cord injuries, which can be devastating. Studies have found that vibration therapy can help improve walking function, spasticity (muscle stiffness/tightness), and strength— all in those with a spinal cord injury.

Research regarding other types of injury is still limited, but there is evidence that vibration therapy can help with rehab following ACL reconstruction.

May Help Those with Parkinson’s Disease

Some exciting preliminary research has shown that vibration therapy may have benefits for certain symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.

In one study, the vibrations used came from sound waves delivered to the entire body of participants. The results showed short-term improvement in symptoms like muscle tremors and rigidity.

In a separate study, participants stood on a vibration plate and experience whole body vibration for five 1-minute periods, each separated by a 1-minute break. The results were very similar and revealed significant improvement in muscle tremors, rigidity, and overall motor score.

Though these studies were both small, they hold a lot of promise for those living with Parkinson’s. Hopefully, there will be more breakthrough findings to come!

Are There Any Risks with Vibration Therapy?

In general, vibration therapy is suitable for people of all ages and all fitness levels. However, there are a few “precautions” to take note of.

First, vibration plates often come with a warning against using them during pregnancy. That is not to say they have been proven harmful during pregnancy (they haven’t), but there isn’t clinical research documenting their safety. The best approach is to consult a healthcare professional before use if you are pregnant.

You may also want to approach certain exercises on a vibration plate with caution and consult your healthcare provider first if you have a health condition, particularly one that affects your balance.

However, whole body vibration is proving helpful for numerous health issues, including possibly even cancer, so don’t simply write it off. Instead, consult a knowledgeable practitioner (ideally a holistic one) on whether vibration therapy can help your specific condition.

Activated Charcoal to Detox

Activated Charcoal to Detox. I’m a big fan of activated charcoal. It is not just another fad supplement popping up on the market. It has been used for at least a couple of hundred years for medicinal purposes and can be easily incorporated into your health care routine to help detoxify your life. Let me tell you how.

Most of us have heard about activated charcoal. It’s been used in hospital emergency rooms for years to treat alcohol poisoning and drug overdoses. It works by attaching to toxins in the stomach and absorbing them before they can get into the bloodstream.

I am personally a HUGE fan of activated charcoal and currently use it on a regular basis as I am healing and recovering from a major chronic illness that requires a lot of detoxification. I cannot say enough about how much it has helped my healing journey. And I am planning on sharing more and more about my process here on the blog. I hope that you find it helpful.

WHAT IS ACTIVATED CHARCOAL?

Now I am not talking about the charcoal that you put into your barbecue grill. This type of charcoal is loaded with toxins and should never been consumed. Activated charcoal is a specific kind of charcoal that has been heated to increase its absorptive power. A gram of active charcoal has the surface area of roughly 5400 square feet. WHOA!

It is a fine, black powder that is odorless, tasteless, and nontoxic. And it works by trapping toxins and chemicals in its millions of tiny pores. The porous surface of activated charcoal has a negative electric charge that causes positive charged toxins and gas to bond with it.

In an emergency room situation, activated charcoal reduces the absorption of poisonous substances up to 60%. It has been a lifesaver in many instances.

And folks have been using it for decades to help detoxify and cleanse the body at home as well. It traps toxins and chemicals in the body, allowing them to be flushed out so the body doesn’t reabsorb them.

6 WAYS TO USE ACTIVATED CHARCOAL TO DETOX YOUR LIFE

Activated charcoal is not just for emergency room use. It can also be used at home for things like daily detox, digestive issues, whitening teeth, brightening the skin, and more. Let’s take a quick look at how that all works to use Activated Charcoal to Detox.

NOTE: Please be aware that if using activated charcoal internally, it is crucial to make sure to stay extra hydrated in order to get the charcoal into your body, flush out the toxins, and to avoid constipation.

When using activated charcoal for internal purposes, I highly recommend using one made from coconut shells as it is the cleanest source that I have found. THIS is the brand that I currently use. If you prefer capsules, you can try THIS brand.

——————————————————————————————————–

1. BODY DETOX

Environmental factors like pesticides on food, chemicals in the water we drink and exposure to mold, create a toxic burden in our bodies. Many of us have chronic illnesses that make us more susceptible to these things, and activated charcoal can help lessen that burden.

It can be used to gently bind to and absorb toxins, mold, and chemicals in the body to help us feel healthier. I personally use it to help alleviate symptoms of my treatment for SIBO. I use it during treatment once or twice a day (1 to 3 grams), at least 90 minutes away from any other supplements or meds, to help my body eliminate toxins and by products of my treatments. This helps tremendously with the brain fog that I get.

I also use it when eating out if I feel like something doesn’t agree with me to pull toxins or allergic triggers out of my digestive tract. You can also use it at the first sign of food poisoning. I’ve done this many times while traveling the world. I usually take 0.5 to 1 gram every couple of hours until resolved.

It can also be used for a gentle 2-day detox once in a while by taking 1 to 1.5 grams 3 times a day. Be sure to take at least 90 minutes before a meal or any other supplement. And lots of water, of course!

——————————————————————————————————–

2. REDUCE GAS AND BLOATING

Got gas and bloating? Try taking about 500 mg of activated charcoal about an hour before your meal. It works by binding the gas-causing byproducts in foods that cause discomfort. Be sure to drink a glass or two of water with your dose to help get the charcoal into your body.

TEETH WHITENING

It may sound crazy, but you can use activated charcoal to whiten your teeth. Simply pour the content of one capsule onto a wet toothbrush. Carefully (because the stuff can be messy) insert toothbrush into your mouth and brush for 2-3 minutes. Spit and rinse. I have heard that some folks are concerned about the abrasiveness of the charcoal. If you are worried or have sensitive teeth. You can simply create a paste with the charcoal and a bit of water and dab onto your teeth. Allow to sit for 3 minutes then rinse. You can also use a great toothpaste for this PerioBiotic Silver Toothpaste.

NOTE: With plain Acitvated Charcoal possible staining can occur if you have crowns, caps or porcelain veneers. In addition, if your teeth become sensitive, quit using it. Oh, and like I said, the stuff can be messy. Be sure to protect surfaces and fabrics.

——————————————————————————————————–

4. RELIEVE BITES AND BEE STINGS

Because activated charcoal is such a great all-around detoxifier, applying a paste of activated charcoal and a bit of water to a bug bite or bee sting (and then covering it with a cloth or bandage) can relieve pain, itching and swelling. Reapply as often as needed until feeling better.

——————————————————————————————————–

5. PREVENTING A HANGOVER

Now you guys know that I am not advocating drinking alcohol regularly, but it is said that taking 1 to 1.5 grams of activated charcoal after an evening of drinking alcohol can help prevent a hangover. And of course, water, water, water.

FOR GLOWING, CLEAR SKIN

OK, this is my favorite way to use activated charcoal. Did you know that you can use it in the same way to help clear your skin? Activated charcoal is like a magnet to attract and absorb dirt and oil, making it perfect for clearing and refining pores. Activated charcoal when used in a face mask binds to and helps pull the dirt out of your pores, making them less visible (it’s the oil and dirt that makes them appear bigger). When dirt and oil in your pores come in contact with the carbon in the activated charcoal, they stick to it and then get washed away when you rinse.

Activated Charcoal when used as a cleanser or mask, can balance out and remove excess oil from the skin, leaving it clean and smooth. Be sure to use it sparingly so as not to over-dry the skin. I recommend using a charcoal cleansing bar that has added oils to moisturize as well.

Activated charcoal can help with acne by deeply cleansing and detoxifying the skin. It has anti-bacterial properties to help fight blemishes. It draws bacteria, chemicals, dirt, oil, and other micro-particles to the surface of skin, helping you to have that healthy, glowing, clear skin. You can use it on your face, chest, and back. Or simply anywhere you are experiencing break outs.

——————————————————————————————————–

HOW TO USE ACTIVATED CHARCOAL TO DETOX FOR BEAUTIFUL SKIN

1. MAKE A FACE MASK

Making a face mask with activated charcoal is super simple. You can check out my DIY Cleansing Clay Mask or simply add a capsule or two of activated charcoal to a bit of raw honey or aloe vera gel. Mix, apply to face for 15 minutes, and rinse.

You can also add activated charcoal to any of the masks found in my Celesty Skincare Line. I highly recommend creating some time for self-care. Your skin will thank you!

Use masks with activated charcoal no more than 1-2 times per week. It can be drying to the skin. Be sure to follow up with a moisturizer suited for your skin type.

Don’t want to make your own? Check out this Purifying Charcoal Mask. It’s a mineral-rich mix of kaolin clay and charcoal. It’s the best quality charcoal mask I have found. Check it out HERE.

2. USE A CHARCOAL CLEANSING BAR

Another super easy way to incorporate activated charcoal into your skincare routine is to use a charcoal cleansing bar. Basically, it is a bar of soap with activated charcoal in it. You can use it 1-3 times per week to help keep your skin clean and clear. Again, use in moderation as it can be drying.

You can find charcoal cleansing bars that have added moisturizers. This will help to keep your skin clean AND balanced.

NOTE: This post is not intended to be medical advice. All of this information is just practical stuff I have learned along the way on my own personal healing journey. We are all unique individuals and respond differently to things. Please consult with your primary health care provider before making changes to your health care routine. And please research carefully anything you put into your body. Be well.

How Safe Is Your Mascara?

Mascara is one of the number one beauty products used by women. But before you layer on the thick lashes, take a look at what may be lurking in your favorite mascara. How safe is your mascara?

Who doesn’t love having a set of long, lush lashes? Women all over the world agree that dramatic lashes can instantly turn boring into fabulous. And it is estimated that the average woman spends almost $4,000 on mascara in her lifetime.

Many of us don’t think twice before we put on our favorite mascara. We have been doing it since we can remember. It’s just part of what we do. It makes our eyes look brighter. Our eyes stand out more with our long, lush lashes. It makes us feel good to look good. And there is nothing wrong with that,

But what concerns me is what’s in our mascara. I already know that there is very little regulation of the beauty industry. The United States has not passed a law to regulate the ingredients (meaning chemicals) used in the beauty industry since 1938. Most of us weren’t even born in 1938. What’s up with that? Shouldn’t we be concerned about the chemicals we are putting on our bodies, especially around our eyes?

Because I love my mascara, I decided to do a bit of research. I decided to take a look at the ingredients in popular mascaras and see how they rate with the Environmental Working Group for safety. Here’s what I found:

8 UNSAFE INGREDIENTS TO AVOID IN MASCARA

1. PARABENS

Parabens are harmful preservatives that are added to beauty products to increase their shelf life. Unfortunately, they not only keep bacteria from growing in our mascara, but they also mimic the hormone estrogen and are known as endocrine disruptors. Yes, that means that the parabens in your mascara could be affecting your hormones. Parabens have also been linked to breast and skin cancer, reproductive problems, and developmental issues in pregnancy.

Parabens are known irritants that cause rashes, swelling and redness. Ever wonder why your mascara makes your eyes itch? It’s the parabens irritating your eyes.

2. PROPYLENE GLYCOL

Propylene glycol is a petroleum derivative used in mascara. It is also a frequent food additive (as E1520) and is also found in deodorant sticks, toothpaste, mouthwash, tobacco products, and other industrial products such as anti-freeze and brake fluid. Brake fluid???

While the FDA considers propylene glycol “safe,” it has been linked to skin and respiratory issues. According to the Material Safety Data Sheet on propylene glycol, the chemical is a strong skin irritant, and has been implicated in contact dermatitis. The sheet goes on to warn that the ingredient can inhibit skin cell growth and damage cell membranes, causing rashes, dry skin, and surface damage. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) rates it as a moderate health risk for skin and lung irritation and has concerns regarding cancer, developmental and reproductive toxicity, allergies and immunotoxicity, irritation and enhanced skin absorption, and organ system toxicity.

Propylene glycol also enhances absorption. That means that the other harmful chemicals in your products are more likely to penetrate the surface layer of the skin and go deeper, into the bloodstream.

3. RETINYL ACETATE (VITAMIN A ACETATE)

Many people think that because it is a vitamin, Retinyl acetate is safe to use. But the EWG classifies retinyl acetate as a high-risk ingredient in cosmetics. It is known to cause biochemical or cellular changes and is linked to positive cancer mutations in studies. Canada has banned the use of retinyl acetate is the use of cosmetics.

4. ALUMINUM POWDER

Aluminum Powder is a metallic substance composed of finely ground particles of aluminum and is used to give color to mascara. It is also a known neurotoxin and interferes with essential functions of our cells and bodily processes. Long term exposure to aluminum powder can impair the body’s ability to excrete heavy metals like mercury. This can result in making any amount of heavy metal exposure that is in the body even more toxic.

5. COAL TAR DYES

Coal tar dyes are containing heavy metals and are used as colorants in mascara. Look for FD & C Blue no. 1 on the label. Also, you may find them listed as a five-digit number that is preceded by a Cl. (includes D&C Blue 1, Green 3, Yellow 5, Yellow 6, Red 33, etc.) They may also be labelled as Aminphenol, Diaminodenzene or Phenylenediamine. These dyes are considered carcinogenic (cancer0causing), and the heavy metals can be toxic to the brain.

6. FRAGRANCE

I am always wary of anything that say “fragrance.” Fragrances are trade secrets, and ingredients do not have to be revealed. They are mainly used to cover up the smell of other chemicals in the product, mainly coal tar dyes in mascara. Fragrances can be irritating to the eyes and skin. Other reactions can include dizziness, headaches, acne, and allergies. Fragrances are sometime listed as “parfums” in the ingredient list.

7. FORMALDEHYDE RELEASING PRESERVATIVES

Formaldehyde is a carcinogenic impurity released by a number of cosmetic preservatives. It is rated very hazardous by the EWG and is categorized as carcinogenic (cancer-causing.) It is also associated with contact dermatitis when used in cosmetics and beauty care products. Often labelled under different names such as DMDM, imidazolindyl urea, methenamine, diazuli dinyl urea, and quaternium-15 – just to name a few.

8. BHT AND BHA

BHT and BHA are used as preservatives in mascara and are considered endocrine disruptors. Studies have linked BHA with cancer. They are both harmful to fish and other wildlife.

HOW TO CHOOSE A SAFE MASCARA

Basically, you want to find a product that is safe and is not toxic. The best way to check the safety of your current mascara is to check out the EWG’s Skin Deep Database. You can type in your brand and see how it rates for safety. You can also search for individual ingredients in your mascara to see how safe it is.

So, how safe is your mascara? If your favorite mascara rates between a 1 and 2, you know you have a good, safe brand. Ratings of 3 to 5 are considered so-so. You may consider switching to a safer brand when you run out. Anything above a 5 is considered unsafe and should probably be avoided.

I’m not one to fix something if it’s not broken. If you have a good brand that you love and it’s rated safe, stick with it. If your current brand is less than clean, you may want to consider trying a safer brand.

MY FAVORITE SAFE MASCARAS

I have 2 mascaras that I can personally recommend. The first one is my primer to moisturize and protect my lashes which I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE. It’s safe, and it works!
WHY COLD PLUNGING IS PART OF MY MORNING ROUTINE (BENEFITS OF COLD THERAPY)

Cold plunging has been a part of my self-care routine for the past six months. And honestly, it has changed my life. Let’s talk about the benefits of cold therapy.

WHAT IS COLD THERAPY?

Cold therapy (also called cryotherapy or cold thermogenesis) is essentially the process of using cold temperatures for health benefits. This type of therapy has been used for hundreds of years to decrease pain, improve recovery, and to improve overall health.

Taking a cold shower is an easy way to experience cold therapy. Athletes often submerse themselves in cold tubs and ice baths. And whole body cryotherapy, in a specialized chamber using liquid nitrogen, is becoming available all over the place.

BENEFITS OF COLD THERAPY

While it may sound a bit crazy to purposefully expose yourself to extreme cold temperatures, there is actually quite a bit of science behind the practice.

For those of you that like to skim, here’s the quick version. Please continue reading below if you’re a science nerd like me and want to know all the things. ?

8 Health Benefits of Cold Therapy

MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE

I love cold plunging.

For those that know me, this is pretty incredible, given that I have absolutely hated cold up until now. But for the past 6 months, I’ve learned to really appreciate the benefits of cold temperatures.

I started taking cold showers last summer as an experiment to see if it would help improve some of the lingering cognitive symptoms I still had from being sick for so many years. I started doing more research and following other people who were into cold therapy.

What I soon discovered is that I prefer cold plunging in a bath tub to cold showers. Immersing myself in still cold water enabled me to better calm my nervous system.

I began by filling my bathtub up with cold water from the tap and immersing in it every morning. I soon started adding several large ice cubes that I made in plastic tubs in my freezer. It didn’t take long for me to realize how beneficial this practice was for my brain health. I was feeling more awake and alert after my morning plunge. It put me in a good mood for hours afterwards. I felt calmer throughout my day. I was basically feeling happier.

Once the winter months came, we installed a claw foot bathtub on the back deck just outside of our bedroom. I keep this filled with water (changing the water every 4-5 days), and I plunge in it almost every morning after taking a quick hot shower.

The water temperature ranges from 30’F to about 45’F, depending on the outside temperature. THIS is the digital handheld thermometer I use. I spend about 2 to 2 and 1/2 minutes in my cold plunge. Once the weather gets warmer gain, I will go back to adding large ice cubes from my freezer.

THE BENEFITS OF COLD THERAPY I’VE NOTICED

The first thing I noticed about cold therapy is that I feel AMAZING afterwards. I feel alert, awake, and alive. Cold plunging immediately improves my mood, and I feel overall happier when I do it regularly.

I also notice that after cold plunging, it is much easier to focus and get my work done. My brain feels clear and sharp.

Weight management and blood sugar control can be an issue for me. I have noticed that I am a bit leaner in the past 6 months and find myself needing more calories, especially on days that I work out. I have no scientific evidence, but maybe my metabolism is faster due to the cold plunging.

I’ve noticed also that I feel less cold. I have had cold intolerance since I can remember. I have “hated” the cold. Cold plunging has made cold more tolerable for me.

Working out regularly, and cold plunging has been really great for sore muscles. I can tell a big difference once I get out of the cold water. I was experiencing shoulder pain a couple of months ago from over-training. Cold therapy really helped with immediate pain relief that would last for a couple of hours.

I wish I had a way to measure immune response. But I can say that since I have been cold plunging almost every day, I have remained pretty healthy. I got one cold over the holidays, but it was mild and I got over it in a few days. Full disclosure here, I do take supplements for immune health and optimize exercise and sleep, which all help with immune function.

I think the biggest lesson I have learned from cold plunging is that I CAN DO HARD THINGS. Putting myself in a “stressful” situation every morning is teaching me to remain calm in other aspects of my life. Feeling more resilient. More in control of my emotions. I feel more able to handle difficult situations. And that makes my life better in so many ways.

HOW TO GET STARTED

Let me start by saying that cold plunging is not for everyone. And it would make sense not to just toss yourself into freezing cold water before acclimating yourself to cold temperatures first. Start slowly and work up to colder temperatures and more time. If you have pre-existing health conditions (especially cardiac conditions), please consult with your medical provider before starting any new health regimen.

Taking cold showers is the easiest way to dive into cold therapy. It’s quick, easy, and free. Simply turn the water to cold after your shower and let the cold begin. Start with just 15-30 seconds and work up from there. It’s amazing what a little cold water will do.

The benefits of cold therapy can be felt from just taking cold showers, but many people like to take it to the next level and start cold plunging in icy water. The optimal temperature for cold therapy is below 55’F.

Check it out for yourself. Do your own research and see what works for you right now your current season of your life.

TRAINING THE BRAIN WITH THE BREATH

While there are many physiological benefits to cold therapy, training the brain and the nervous system is where the real magic happens. `

Our natural reaction to submerging ourselves in cold water (or turning on a cold shower) is to gasp and to get really tight. The practice of remaining calm while putting ourself in a stressful situation is what trains the brain to remain calm in other stressful situations in life. That is why I focus on the breath while doing my cold plunge.

Slow and deep breathing has a calming effect on the the brain and nervous system. Allowing my breath to really slow down and get really deep when in cold water tells my brain that I’m OK… I am calm. This build resilience and helps with feelings of overwhelm, anger, frustrations, and anxiety during other difficult times in life. I essentially rewires my brain to not always go to the “fight or flight” place that I am accustomed to going. It teaches me to remain calm and relaxed even if I’m feeling stressed.

4 Part Breath (or Box Breathing) is a breathing technique with a simple 4 second rotation of breathing in, holding your breath, breathing out, holding your breath, and repeating. It’s a surprisingly simple and effective way to help regain calm and control of your thoughts when under stress.

Here are the directions:

Inhale through the nose for 4 seconds

Hold your lungs full for 4 seconds

Exhale through nose or mouth) for 4 seconds

Hold your lungs empty for 4 seconds

Repeat

Other breathing techniques to use during cold therapy :

simply focus on breathing in and breathing out, completely relaxing the body on the exhale.

breath in for count of 4, breath out for the count of 8

THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE BENEFITS OF COLD THERAPY

improves cardiovascular circulation

Immersing yourself in cold water stimulates blood flow, moving the blood through your vessels and around vital organ and cells in your body. Cold therapy makes every single vessel in your body contract, making it essentially a cardiovascular workout that brings more oxygen, CO2, nutrients, hormones, and toxins in and out of our cells. Considering that cardiovascular disease is the main cause of death in the US, having a daily practice that improves cardiovascular health sounds like a pretty good idea.

improves lymphatic circulation

The lymphatic system is a network of vessels throughout the body that carry our lymphatic fluid back towards the heart. Its job is to regulate balance of fluids in the body, to absorb and transports fatty acids and fats, and to support the body’s immune system by filtering out harmful microorganisms and cellular waste from lymph. Cold therapy causes the lymph vessels in the body to contract, helping the lymphatic system better do its job and supporting detoxification in the body.

boosts metabolism, lowers blood sugar, and weight management

Immersing yourself in cold water will kick start your metabolism. Shivering in cold water is your body’s attempt to maintain core temperature. Shivering generates heat, and this increase in heat means a boost to your metabolism.

People who regularly expose themselves to cold tend to have higher levels of brown fat (brown adipose tissue or BAT) in the body, which converts food energy into heat energy. This is the good fat that when it burns it helps to generate heat without shivering AND also burns calories. With cold exposure, glucose uptake has been observed to increase 12-fold in brown fat, along with a significant increase in metabolism and energy expenditure.

Cold exposure also can cause blood glucose to be burned rapidly as fuel to help heat the body before that blood sugar can potentially be converted to fat via the liver. Brown fat is being studied as a possible therapy for obesity and diabetes.

While cold therapy isn’t a magic pill for weight loss, the increase in metabolic rate along with healthy food, lifestyle, and exercise choices may help with weight management.

reduces inflammation and pain

Most of us have used probably cold therapy (ice) to reduce inflammation. And you may have heard about professional athletes soaking in ice baths after strenuous workouts. Immersing the body in cold water lowers body tissue temperature and constricts the blood vessels. This reduces swelling and inflammation, and can numb nerve endings, bringing immediate pain relief. Regular cold showers or cold plunging can be a useful part of pain management.

improves immune response

I’ve done quite a bit of reading on this topic. I like hard science and wish I could find more evidence. But research does point to cold exposure boosting the production of antioxidants like glutathione. Research also has shown that cold therapy increases levels of immune system cells that help fight disease and infection, specifically increased leukocytosis and granulocytosis, an increase in natural killer cell count and activity, and a rise in circulating levels of interleukin-6. This is likely due to norepinephrine release that happens with cold exposure. Basically, cold therapy gives your immune system a big boost.

improves mental focus

This was the first thing that I noticed personally with cold plunging. Cold water feels a bit shocking and makes you feel awake and alert. This is my favorite way to start my day. After I cold plunge, I feel pumped and ready for my day. That exhilarated feeing lasts for hours into my day.

boosts your mood

Improved mood has been the most surprising benefit of cold therapy for me. I have noticed a dramatic increase in my happiness and overall mood. This is because cold water triggers a flood of mood-boosting neurotransmitters, which make you feel happy. It’s no surprise that research shows that cold showers can help treat symptoms of depression.

Cold therapy can also be used to help with anxiety. Anxiety happens when you allow your emotions to control how you feel, negatively affecting your nervous system. Regular cold exposure can help you gain a bit of control over your emotions and reactions, helping to train your nervous system to stay calm, even when exposed to stress. This helps you stay out of fight or flight mode.

improves mental resilience

This last benefits of cold therapy goes along with training the nervous system and brain to remain calm when immersed in cold water. When you regularly expose yourself to stress (cold water) and remain calm while doing it, it teaches your brain to remain calm in every day situations. Your brain and nervous system gets used to this small amount of stress and you are more easily able to think straight and manage your stress levels when difficult situations arise. Your nervous system remains calm. You get less flustered. You are better able to manage anger and frustration.

20 minutes in cold seems like a bit too much. Many people just do 5 -7 minutes. Hot cold therapy is used all over the world. It can be very beneficial. I think it’s great that your boys are doing it too. Just be sure that they are well hydrated and that they don’t move in and out of the water and heat too fast.
